History of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.

and the Phenomenal Phi Delta Zeta Chapter

National History

It was in 1920 at Howard University when Arizona Cleaver Stemmons was approached by Charles Robert Taylor, a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated, with the idea of organizing a sister organization to their fraternity. During a time when women and African American rights were being denied throughout the United States of America, Arizona Cleaver Stemmons took this opportunity to promote and uplift both communities. With the help of her four friends, Myrtle Tyler Faithful, Viola Tyler Goings, Fannie Pettie Watts, and Pearl Anna Neal, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority was organized. Inspired by the need for change, these women combined their strengths under the principles of Scholarship, Sisterly Love, Service and Finer Womanhood.
